Natures Lawnmower in flower

The Yellow Rattle is now nicely in flower and as you can see, controlling the grass well. Considering that this meadow site was cut out from a lawn only a few years ago without any chemical intervention, or digging, it is remarkable how it has taken to gradual meadow development. At this time of year it can be very rewarding trying to spot orchids in bud, it is surprising how well some of them hide until they have flowers and can be more easily spotted.

It was a sure sign of warm evenings when only yesterday we were visited by a cockchafer, Melolontha melolontha, which decided it lied our lights and kept banging its head against the window. I know that they are supposed to damage fruit trees, but I think they are rather engaging.

People tell me they have problems with slugs and snails on their plant racks, thankfully not a problem here, the stock is too important. What I have done is extended the legs of the racks by about 30cm using copper pipe. The snails just do not like it, regardless of there being a free meal at the top.

Common Spotted Orchids Start Flowering

First Common Spotted of the year
This week has seen the first of our Common Spotted orchids coming into flower. This particular one is very robust plant which started growing early and has flowered early as well. The leaves are particularly fine as they are very heavily marked in purple.

Our collection of species is increasing as we take new plants out of culture and introduce them into pots. At this time they are very delicate as the cuticle tends to be porous as they have not had to conserve water while they were in sealed culture vessels. Great care has to be taken to introduce them gently to open air life, even though they will be ideally suited to growing in the garden by the time we offer them for sale.

Wild flowers in the meadow

The trefoil is now in flower in the meadow
Now we are half way through May the meadow buttercups are in full flower, as are the much smaller trefoils. We have been visited by a stream of Orange Tip butterflies, the males can be spotted by the orange wing tip and the females because they are much smaller that the whites which come through at this time of year.

Some of our more established Common Spotted orchids in the meadow are already starting to flower, one of them even though the flower spike is still quite short. Green Winged orchids are well into flower and stand out against the much lower foliage around them at this time of year. Besides not having the purple spots on the leaves that you find on Early Purples, I have never seen Green Winged orchids growing in woodland, the favourite haunt of the Early Purples
